Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Treatment Program for Teens
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is more than just low self-esteem—it’s a serious mental health condition where teens obsess over perceived flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often minor or not noticeable to others, but they feel overwhelming and distressing to the teen.
Teens with BDD may spend hours each day worrying about how they look, comparing themselves to others, or trying to fix what they see as defects. This can lead to anxiety, depression, isolation, and even self-harm.
At Silver State, we help teens move beyond these obsessive thoughts and develop a healthier relationship with their body and identity. Our residential program provides structure, clinical support, and emotional safety to guide teens through the complex process of recovery.
What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)?
BDD is a mental health condition where a person becomes fixated on one or more perceived defects in their physical appearance. These flaws may be minor or imagined, but the distress they cause is very real.
Common focus areas include skin, nose, hair, body size, or facial features. Teens with BDD often believe these features make them unattractive, broken, or unacceptable—despite reassurance from others.
BDD often includes:
Obsessive mirror checking
Seeking constant validation or hiding appearance
Comparing themselves negatively to others
Avoiding social situations
Excessive grooming or attempts to “fix” the flaw
BDD can interfere with daily life, school, relationships, and self-worth. At Silver State, we offer teens a path toward freedom from this cycle of fear, comparison, and shame.
Signs and Symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) in Teens
While many teens experience some level of body insecurity, BDD goes far deeper and can be emotionally paralyzing. Warning signs may include:
Intense preoccupation with a specific part of the body
Mirror checking, skin picking, or excessive grooming
Avoiding photos, mirrors, or video calls
Seeking constant reassurance from friends or family
Social withdrawal due to appearance-related anxiety
Avoiding school or activities due to self-image concerns
Depression, low self-worth, or suicidal thoughts
If these behaviors are interfering with your teen’s ability to live a full life, residential treatment may be the supportive step they need to begin recovery.
Why Individualized Plans Matter for Teens with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
BDD often stems from complex layers of emotional pain, trauma, and learned self-criticism. That’s why our care begins with a full psychological, behavioral, and medical assessment for each teen.
We then develop a personalized treatment plan that may include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
Body image and self-compassion work
Group therapy and peer connection
Psychiatric care (if needed)
Family therapy to build understanding and support
Expressive and movement-based healing modalities
We teach teens how to challenge intrusive thoughts, face avoided situations, and discover a sense of worth that isn’t tied to how they look.
The Silver State Adolescent Approach
At Silver State, we believe teens are more than how they see themselves in a mirror. We help them rediscover their identity beyond perceived flaws and guide them toward a deeper understanding of who they are—capable, unique, and worthy of care.
Our residential environment is structured but compassionate. We combine therapeutic accountability with daily support and clinical expertise to address the emotional, behavioral, and neurological roots of BDD.
Healing doesn’t come from changing how you look—it comes from changing how you see yourself. We’re here to walk that journey with every teen who walks through our doors.
